Professional BMX rider Nigel Sylvester was born in New York City on August 23, 1987. Street life was a vital part of his neighborhood in Queens, and he built an impressive reputation for his ability to make astonishing tricks look smooth on local streets and parks as well as other New York venues. His sponsors include Nike, Animal Bikes, Gatorade, Dan's Comp and G-SHOCK.
"For me, having a tool I can use worldwide, on and off my bike, is ideal."
-When and why did you start riding BMX freestyle?
I've been riding bicycles for as long as I can remember. I started riding BMX when I was 12 years old. I fell in love with the feeling I got from riding the bikes and landing tricks. Back when I was 12, I thought BMX was the coolest thing on the planet, and I still feel the same way.
-What makes being a G-SHOCK brand ambassador special to you, especially with the 30th Anniversary coming up?
G-SHOCK is one of the staple brands in pop culture. I grew up embracing the brand. I was a fan as a kid and I still am to this day. Signing with G-SHOCK over a year ago and being an ambassador has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I'm honored to be a part of the G-SHOCK family as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary.
-What does G-SHOCK mean to you personally, and how does it fit into your daily life?
For me, G-SHOCK is a part of life. The ability to use the watches in so many different moments that occur naturally in life makes it hard not to create a personal bond with the brand. For me, having a tool I can use worldwide, on and off my bike, is ideal.
-G-SHOCK's design philosophy centers on the pursuit of “Absolute Toughness." What does this philosophy mean to you?
Absolute Toughness applies to me in a couple of different ways, mentally and physically, which are two vital components of BMX riding. Absolute mental toughness helps me when I'm in a session and mental blocks start to frustrate me. Absolute physical toughness keeps me on my bike when I feel beat up and worn out from a super long filming session.
-What are your goals for 2012 and beyond, and what challenges will you need to overcome to achieve them?
My goal is to continue to progress and challenge myself as well as my sport. Staying focused, determined and motivated have been factors in my success, and I plan to keep these things in motion.
