Alyssa Wooten INTERVIEW

So we hear you are half Japanese. Can you tell us about your background?

Yes, my Mom is from Japan, and my Dad is from the mainland, so I'm half and half. My Mom always spoke Japanese to me, and my Dad English. I kind of grew up speaking both. Since I go to school, here in Hawaii, I do feel more comfortable speaking, reading, and writing in English, but I wish to someday read and write in Japanese as well.

What's your impression of Japan? Do you have any plans of coming to Japan this year?

I love Japan! My Mom used to take me in the summers to visit my Obachan. My Obachan lives in Tokyo, and it's so different there, so many tall buildings, people, and trains! It is the complete opposite of Hawaii. Last year I went to Kanagawa and that place of was a lot less "city" likes. The beach was close by, but still very cold! In Tokyo the shopping is awesome! I have to go to Harajuku every time I visit. I wish to visit Japan this summer again.

Can you tell us how you started surfing?

I first started when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I was the "new kid" at school and I made some new friends, and one weekend they took me surfing. We all tandem on one board, and I had the time of my life!! I started going to the beach every day after school with them.

What changed the most after you started surfing?

I think that my whole life changed. All my habits, motives, and actions were all for surfing. I wanted to surf everyday and so I did everything that I could do to do that. I came home late a lot due to catching that "last wave". Hahah.

We hear you are working hard doing contests. How is it going? What are your goals this year as far as the contests go.

I have been trying a lot harder in contest these days, I think back then I was kind of just cruising, and hanging out with my friends, and now I am actually trying. I think that is paying off, I've been making most of my finals, and as of right now, I am just concentrating on the contests that are coming up. For example, Regional is in a week, and it is held at Kewalos my favorite break, so I am really excited for that one!

How's school? What's your favorite subject?

Schools great! I have 3 classes, English, Math, and Sociology. Surprisingly enough, this year I get along great with all my teachers, and I enjoy all my classes. But in all honesty I love English class, I have learned so much, than any other class. My least favorite is Math, I'm horrible at math! I had a problem with that subject since I was in middle school!

We hear you make your own jewelry. Can you tell us about that?

Yes, ever since I was little I enjoyed making things with my hands. From wood to graphics, I like making it! Last year I made it to Nationals in California, but I couldn't afford to go. So I made earrings to pay for my way there! It was a great success, everybody loved it. So I continue to make them to this day. I plan to someday have my own company, and plan to go to school for it.

What's your favorite music? Favorite artists?

Music is my life seriously! Whenever I'm feeling down I just listen to my favorite music, and that usually makes me feel better. I have always loved No Doubt and Linkin Park stuff like that. Recently I've been rocking out to a lot of Paramour, The Kooks, Lykke Li, etc. I pretty much like anything that is positive and has a beat that I can dance to.

Can you tell us what you like about G-Shock/Baby-G?

I really like G-shock/Baby-G because they are functional as well as fashionable!! It's really cute, I can match them with all my outfits, and I can still tell the time, surf with them, and not worry about it! It's all G!

What's your dream? Any life plans?

My dream is to be successful, and to not have a stressful future. I want to be carefree when I get older and surf! I want to have my jewelry business up and running in the next ten years!

Do you have any advice to surfer girls in Japan?

Believe in yourself, if you want something, go out and grab it! No one in this world is going to hand you nothing. Be strong, and stray away from the negative. When you know something isn't right, fix it ASAP.
