Joel Centeio INTERVIEW

We hear you got married recently, congrats! So how's married life?

Married life is good! Not much has changed for me and my wife Ashley we been together for a while now. We just wanted to make it right and get married. So it's a really great thing for us.

We know you train hard on top of just surfing. Can you tell us about your training schedule?

We train 3 times a week. Our trainer is Kimo Moddlesworth at Kamemeha School. It's a pretty solid workout. About 2 hours long. We do some running, cardio, plyo metrics, little bit of free weights. Itfs a really good workout for surfing.

How was the North Shore season this year?

It was pretty good this year; we had really good start to the season. A lot of fun days at Backdoor, OTW, and Haleiwa. But the late season was a letdown. Usually the late season gets good swell, good weather, and no crowds. Not this year. I can't complain I been surfing everyday!

What are you practicing the most right now?

I been just trying to get in the water more, I mean you can train hard outside the water but if youfre not putting the time in the water it doesn't work out. So yeah, I just have been trying to get in the water a lot more.

Of all the surf trips you've gone so far, which one was the best?

I'd have to say Menatawai's boat trip maybe 6 years ago. We had an awesome crew of surfers, and the waves were going off the whole time! 12 days straight of perfect macaroni's, and lance's right! You can really fine-tune your surfing over there.

What do you love about Hawaii?

I love everything about Hawaii! Family, Friends, Waves, Weather. That's what it's all about. I can't imagine living anywhere else.

What's your impression of Japan? Do you have any plans of coming to Japan this year?

I really like Japan. I really love the food, and the Japanese people are so respectful. The only thing I donft like about Japan is the tiny waves, and NATTO!! That stuff taste horrible. Ifm not sure if I will be coming to Japan this year, because they cancelled the 6 stars in August. But I would really like to come to surf a typhoon swell in the late summer.

What surfboards are you riding? Which one do you use the most?

I'm riding for HIC surfboards, my shaper is Eric Arakawa. I actually just started riding Arakawa's boards, and they been going really well for me. Arakawa has always made the best big wave boards in Hawaii. But his short boardfs have been working so good for me. I'm riding the element 2 model. The dimensions are 6'0, 18 1/4, 2 1/4. Order one you'll love it!!

How are you using your G-shocks for surfing? What do you like the best about them?

I use my G-Shock's all day every day. I like to use it for the tides, and also when I compete. I just really like how reliable the watches are, and the In4mation designs!!!

What your schedule like this year?

My schedule is not gonna be as busy as the last couple years. The budgets are really tight with my main sponsor (Hurley) so Ifm gonna have to make trips happen on my own. But Ifm looking forward to doing some of the big QS events that have good waves, and also doing some magazine trips. I go to West Australia in a week for a 6 star contest, as well a photo trip. I'm really looking forward to that!!

Whatfs your goal this year?

My goal this year is get a lot of photos in all the magazines, and also get big results in all QS events I do. And if the results are good, I will qualify for the WCT!!

What's the most important thing to get better at surfing? Do you have any advice to everyone?

I have to say putting the time in the water. The more you surf the better you are gonna get. Also experimenting with different types of equipment will always help to find that magic board. A great board will do wonders for your surfing!
